Workshop on Violence Against Women In Politics in Nepal

Event Type: Workshop
Date: June 18, 2009
Location: Hotel Himalaya, Kupondol, Kathmandu,Nepal

The studies conducted by South Asia Partnership-International (SAP-International) at South Asian Regional level shows that gender based violence (GBV) is a major barrier for the lower participation of women in politics. This may have been the case for other sector of public sphere. So there is a need to identify relationship between violence against women and marginalization of women at all levels of decision making. In this regard, Social Inclusion Research Fund (SIRF) and SAP-International is collectively organizing a one day workshop with focus on the two areas of violence against women; VAW in private sphere and in public sphere. The workshop aims towards identifying the issues and agendas of violence against women in Nepal especially in public sphere by initiating a discussion and debate with different key actors and opinion makers.

Violence Against Women In Politics (VAWIP) Advisory Group Meeting

International instruments have played a pivotal role in bringing changes in national policies in South Asia. They need to be modified for incorporating provisions to combat issues of VAWIP that will ultimately support in creating safe and secure political space for women. These changes in international instruments is possible only with consistent, competent and consolidated efforts of committed people who can devote their time and energy for influencing these international instruments for ensuring zero tolerance towards VAWIP. This led to emergence of creating functional Advisory Group to influence international instruments from VAWIP perspective. The Advisory Group comprises of technical experts either in their individual capacity or institutional or network representatives with experience and knowledge on drafting of international instruments such as CEDAW, UNSCR 1325 or Beijing platform and lobbying process with UN and international agencies.

VAWIP Advisory group meeting was held in New Delhi on 6th April 2009.The main agendas of the Advisory group meeting were: drafting of recommendation for harmonization of International Instruments incorporating VAWIP issues, drafting of strategic actions for International policy influencing at UN and other International agencies to incorporate VAWIP agenda in existing International Instruments

Press conference on Violence Against Women In Politics

In today’s media dominated world, news and views can make great impact on the public. The media can assist in gender based discrimination through a stereotypical portrayal of women. On the contrary, it can enhance the development of women through a balanced and non-stereotypical depiction of women. Thus, media has the choice to act both as a perpetrator and as a protagonist.

Considering the fact that the media is one of the key agents of socialization, a press conference on Violence Against Women in Politics (VAWIP) was organized on April 06, 2009 in New Delhi, India. In the press conference, VAWIP Regional Advisory Group Members, comprising of technical experts either in their individual capacity or institutional or network representatives with experience and knowledge on drafting of international instruments such as CEDAW, UNSCR 1325 or Beijing platform and lobbying process with UN and international agencies, shared their opinions on the issues and responded to the questions raised by media personnel.
